Lieutenant Benson reported to Surface Forces Logistics Center – Norfolk Small Boat Product Line on 15 December 2020. Before reporting to SFLC Lieutenant Benson served as a Combat Aviation Officer in the United States Army. Once a Captain in the US Army, Lieutenant Benson was certified and flew UH-60A, UH-60L, and UH-60M Blackhawk Helicopters for seven and half years. His prior assignments were a Maintenance Platoon Leader and Executive Officer with D Company, 3-501st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Armored Division. Lieutenant Benson served as an Assistant Operations Officer in Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 2-82nd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division. He also served as Deputy Director of the Joint Personnel Recovery Center at Al Udeid, Air Base while attached to the US Air Force. On December 7, 2020, Lieutenant Benson was commissioned into the USCG through the Direct Commission Officer program.
A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Lieutenant Benson is a 2012 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where he majored in Marine Engineering Systems with a concentration in Electrical Engineering. He later earned a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from The University of Missouri Science and Technology. Currently, he is an Engineering Management Doctoral Candidate enrolled at George Washington University. He is a licensed FAA Commercial Pilot, licensed Merchant Mariner with a USCG 3rd Engineer Unlimited Tonnage credentials, Intern Engineer (mechanical), and EPA Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery certified.
Lieutenant Benson and his wife, Halston, have one child – Walden (8 months)
